A Journey Born from Passion
Cacella Expeditions was founded by Tshering Namgay, a passionate Bhutanese travel professional with over 15 years of experience in the tourism industry. After years of working with travelers from around the world, Tshering established Cacella Expeditions to offer a more personalized, authentic approach to exploring the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
Our company is named in honor of Father Estêvão Cacella, the Portuguese Jesuit missionary who became the first European to set foot in Bhutan in 1627. His spirit of exploration, cultural curiosity, and respectful engagement embodies the values we bring to every expedition.
Every journey we design reflects our commitment to sustainable tourism, authentic cultural exchange, and the philosophy of Gross National Happiness that makes Bhutan truly unique.
Father Estêvão Cacella(1585–1630)
Father Estêvão Cacella was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and one of history's most remarkable early explorers of the Himalayan region. Born in Portugal in 1585, he joined the Society of Jesus at nineteen and sailed for India in 1614.
In February 1627, Father Cacella and his companion Father João Cabral became the first Europeans to enter and document Bhutan, spending nearly eight months exploring its valleys and monasteries.
During his time in Bhutan, Cacella met the great Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder and unifier of Bhutan, and wrote detailed accounts that remain invaluable historical documents today.
